I vari referendum insegnano.

Come?

Non a caso, l’on.

Lists, long lists, and licenses to vote
Sometimes we find ourselves reflecting on trivial matters: it’s our “freedom to freak out in a free state,” a friend of mine would claim jokingly. These are the little things we focus on so as not to see the elephant in the room. These range from what the neighbor is doing on the balcony to catalytic converters that will save the world. Little things that require half an intellectual effort and which we don’t really believe in. If the room is dark, that’s even better, right? We freak out over trivialities so as not to stand up for the important issues. Holding together something dysfunctional seems far better than getting involved. Until we’re asked to comment on issues for which we don’t always have the expertise. However, they must be addressed before the night wind relegates them to oblivion. It’s like we need to weigh a choice considering the evidence presented, in terms of both timing and methods. The various referendums should teach us something.
The story thus slides from theory to practice. Licenses are required for everything these days: from a helicopter pilot’s license to ride a motorcycle to a doctorate to perform basic tasks at half-union pay. This seems to be the trend. So, we need to be consistent. Now wouldn’t be right to reconsider the old concept of epistocracy? A small provocation, with the possibility of voting only if you demonstrate common sense and a minimal understanding of what you’re doing. How? Simple: a quiz via designated institutions to get your hands on a ballot. True freedom also lies in carefully choosing what doesn’t work and discarding it. A beautiful principle with a fractal effect on our daily lives. There would be no need for stability maneuvers; they would be inherent!
Great philosophers have long debated majorities as a practical necessity for collective action, while at the same time criticizing their aspects regarding morality and individual freedoms (meaning freedom for all). Locke saw it as the major force that moves the body politics in a given direction, considering life, liberty, and property. Rousseau considered it more than a practical compromise, but rather the “general will” of what is right for the entire community. Before voting, there would be so much to consider that voting would need to be postponed, except for seasoned political scientists.
The vote put in terms of a specific license is just a provocation. Obviously, a clique would be created which has great interests in voting and therefore it would go against the very concept of voting in favor of the majority. Even if I get elected by majority, it is not synonymous with doing as I please. Who decides the right questions to enable voting? When we create something, we are not totally objective, they are things that we have generated with our constraints. Let’s ask ourselves: why do systems of any authoritarian nature hate teachers? Simply because they should work with critical thinking, inclusiveness and principles of humanity. Their work should essentially result in less performance, more meaning in what is done and accountability by producing heads that are less easily manipulated.
We therefore arrive at the lists that recall epistocracy in a certain sense. Not surprisingly, the Hon. Magi had opposed this in the appropriate place. In the series, one can expel a Magi who tears the facsimile but not the grain of truth in his words. While preferences can be expressed in local elections, this would not be the case for national elections. The Mellonellum effect, long electoral lists and multiple candidatures. The circle closes, locking down power, a mega majority bonus with 17% more seats. A sort of de facto premiership. In fact, the parties decide for the Chamber and the Senate, where the citizen will be able to choose the party but not the parliamentarian. There is thus a risk of a campaign more for the parties to have a place than between candidates and voters. Analysis: it would become like the specter of inflation eroding salaries, only at a political level. Precisely the lack of representativeness, in the name of stability, which has led to a surge in populism in the world. Many beautiful promises but… Issuing of recipes from above rather than listening to the requests (not the discontent intercepted well by populists) from below, reformulating them and applying them in the reality of the population’s primary needs. Over time? Will machines and algorithms decide whether to replace our ideas in the new evolutionary path? We still create machines and they are neither objective nor neutral (see the thesis of the philosopher Carissa Véliz). If there is no “healthy competition” (equipping everybody with the right tools to compete) in something, be it a sport or an economy, it would only become quantitative exploitation of this activity thanks to rank. The ideal would at this point be collaboration, which would break the single thought of competition on all levels.
Let’s get back to an important quote that should resonate in our head for at least five minutes and jog the memory. It comes from an article in this paper dating June 27, 2026. It’s about rights, or rather human dignity, and the collective consciousness linked to the LGBTQIA+ movement. It goes beyond focusing on the acronym. Being profoundly true, it applies to many things: Sofia Mehiel, “The Popess,” said, “Memory is not a detail. It is the foundation of political and cultural identity.” The so-called progressive and constitutionalist alliance must go beyond the paradigm of names and positions. It must rediscover the strength of true content and define it in action. Looking at the world today, one wonders what public figures like Pertini and Craxi might think: bitterness over the loss of identity, frustration over the end of the concept of government reformism? They firmly believed in the strength and correctness of their ideas, translating them into practice. So much so that they listened to others with different ideas without the need to shield themselves behind labels and/or list games, long or shirt lists and licenses to vote.
