Versante climatico.
I temi: energia, difesa, digitalizzazione, innovazione, ecc.
Back to school.
September 2026 – Back to School, watching the drizzle of world news and various nonsense 2
The climate neck of the woods. Although ‘global warming’ is still being branded a conspiracy theory in some circles, the scientific community is alarmed by warming waters: the average ocean temperature has risen a lot over 40 years. The Mediterranean Sea temperature is estimated to be 3.5-3.8 degrees higher, with heat increasing even below 40 meters of depth. It’s important to remember that marine waters represent approximately 97% of the hydrosphere. Emissions and El Niño put waters under pressure; therefore, their capacity to absorb CO2 decreases, resulting in a greater greenhouse effect and environmental comorbidities (corals, fauna, fishing economy). It’s a vicious circle, and scientists are worried.
If the seas are doing badly, the mountains are no better off. Warming of high mountains increases the danger of glacial floods. The Himalayan chain has lost 12% of its ice over the last 40 years. On August 26, Rai News reported that a flood wave hit Rasuwa, a district of Nepal. Two possible causes are being investigated: instability between the glaciers, possibly due to warming, or seismic activity, or both. In all cases, the theory is that a glacier at 5,200 meters above sea level broke off, damming the river. The gargantuan wave of water struck the Tibetan front, raising the Bhote Koshi River and several neighboring settlements. The dynamics reconstructed with hindsight (see Aftonbladet interviews with members of the scientific community) seem to point to a 600-meter-long block of ice suddenly breaking off with a 1-km fall (like a mini-meteorite), which in turn triggered an earthquake measuring 5 magnitudes on the Richter scale. There are reports of over a hundred confirmed deaths and a people thousand missing.
The “royal art” appears to be suffering somewhat less, judging by some recent vague statements and given the institutional reaction times on climate. Yet, having an impact would require a great deal of courage and deep pockets, as only a consortium of states could achieve. Freedom lies in deciding which authoritative voices to listen to. Example before words: the freedom to defend existential values is distinct from any obligation to accept and resign. The argument is always the same and pragmatic: what is realistic and achievable, and what are the priorities? Embracing a cause like the fight against climate change and the various schools of environmental management is engaging in politics, except it’s not just talk and half-hearted promises. Data shows that countries experiencing exponential growth are unlikely to meet the parameters of sound environmental management. On the other hand, general basic well-being is not tied to large accumulations of wealth. Economy and environment maintain a complex relationship. Although primitive industrialization increased pollution, new technologies allow it to be reduced. Please note. (This happens when there is a well-being that we will call the middle class, which demands clean air and water and more quality services—green energy that, however, does not bring rapid and immense profits to the pockets of a few—for further information see The Daily Economy and ScienceDirect.com.) Some rights, such as the right to a less ‘implosive’ world, are a process that requires continuation and constant input by everyone.
EU News. Super Mario Draghi and Patrick Collison founded the Rhine Group in August 2026. It is a think tank, an organization aimed at translating the Draghi Report on Competitiveness into concrete reforms to reverse the EU’s decline, which is subordinate to the US and lagging China. 170 proposals and recommendations are on the table. The topics: energy, defense, digitalization, innovation, etc. In short, if the EU doesn’t grow, it cannot finance the areas it claims are dear to it: the environment, schools, housing, transportation, healthcare, and the welfare state. It’s worth remembering that the last major reforms date back to Lisbon in 2007, after which the focus shifted to other bureaucratic issues. Yet, liberal democracy is not entirely soulless, even though in recent years it has been very greedy in acting and lacking in courage by looking the other way when it comes to shelving important values and/or human rights. Could the Rhine Group’s proposals bring some of those values back to the surface, even if only consequently? Ultimately, if you can control the present, you can partially control the past. Many hope, or would like to continue believing, in a system that is showing its limits.
Back to school. On September 1st, teachers return to work for the reopening of schools of all levels. From October 1st, RAI Scuola, which replaced Rai Educational, will close. The program was dedicated to scholastic education and teaching. It will be replaced, shifting from teaching to culture, on channel 57 by Italiana. This channel is dedicated to “Italianness” in its local areas: a way of describing the country through different narratives.
Young people seek visibility and approval. Support that older people could provide. Blessing a regenerating force is almost always a good thing. The term “character” has Greek roots and indicates a mark, a brand, or sign of the soul. For the Greeks, the first layer concerns the temperament of an innate biological nature, such as calm rather than agitated types of people. Nature, linked to temperament, represents a certain predisposition; it is the way temperament manifests itself externally. Finally, character is the imprint. The way education and experiences influence temperament. Character develops, and if adequately stimulated, it becomes strong, just, and thoughtful. Therefore, the concept is to make an impact. This is why teachers are called teachers- underpaid, overworked. This is why school is fundamental. Simply put, each of us is born with distinct characteristics and a vital force ready to undergo new experiences. Exams never end (E. De Filippo).
